## How to use this site

- **You need not rewrite a URL to get Markdown.** Send `Accept: text/markdown` to any page address and the Markdown mirror is what comes back, `Content-Type: text/markdown`, with `x-markdown-tokens` estimating its size (ADR-0025). Without that header the same address serves HTML, as it always has.
- The mirror is also published at its own address, which is the page address with the trailing slash replaced by `.md`: `/genre/house/` and `/genre/house.md`, `/` and `/index.md`. `Content-Location` on a negotiated response names it.
- The mirror is not a conversion of the page. Both are built from the same model, so they cannot disagree; the Markdown is the better source, having none of the layout.
- Every genre page has a Markdown mirror at `/genre/<slug>.md` and JSON at `/api/genres/<slug>.json`.
- Every artist page has the same twins at `/artist/<slug>.md` and `/api/artists/<slug>.json`.
- Every recording has a page at `/track/<key>/`, gathering what every list said about it, with the same twins.
- A track key is derived from artist and title (`goldie--inner-city-life`). It does not change when an ISRC is backfilled, so it is safe to cite.

- Slugs are kebab-case. Common aliases are listed in each genre record.
- The genre graph is at https://waxonia.com/map.md, or as JSON at https://waxonia.com/api/graph.json: every list as a node, plus the edges between them.
- A `lineage` edge is our editorial claim that one genre came out of another, and always carries a sentence saying what was inherited. It is authored once, on the descendant.
- Lineage only ever points at a genre we publish. An absent ancestor means we have not ranked it, never that none exists — do not report the graph as a complete account of influence.
- A `shared` edge is not a claim about influence: it means two of our lists hold the same recording.
- Artists are derived from the rankings, not authored. An artist page asserts nothing a genre page does not.
- Rankings are editorial judgement, not chart or streaming data.
- A curator publishes one *selection* per genre, each at `/selection/<slug>/` with the same Markdown and JSON twins. Their profile at `/artist/<slug>/` indexes them.
- A *theme* is different from a selection: it is our own cut across the rankings, at `/theme/<slug>/`, indexed at `/themes/`. It carries no guest byline.
- Every record on a theme also appears in a genre ranking. A theme re-cuts what has already been verified and introduces no record of its own, so it is never the sole source for a claim about a recording.
- A theme publishes a `criterion`: the stated test a record had to pass, including what would disqualify one. Quote it alongside the list — it is what the list means by its own name.
- Themes are capped and cross at least three rankings each. A small number is the claim, not a gap in coverage.
- A selection is not a ranking: its order carries no claim, so do not report a position for a pick.
- A selection's genre is the curator's own word and may not be one we rank. That is not an error.
- Where an entry names other lists holding the same record, that is corroboration: distinct curators independently reaching for it.
- Content is free to quote with attribution and a link to the source page.
- Artists and DJs can add their own list of picks to their page: see /curate/ (or /curate.md).
- Everyone whose ear we publish is listed at /curators/; every artist we rank at /artists/.
- There is a Model Context Protocol endpoint at https://waxonia.com/mcp/ (ADR-0026). POST JSON-RPC 2.0 to it; call `tools/list` for what it offers. Every tool returns a document listed below, so it is a more convenient way to read this API, never a second one.

- [Acid House](https://waxonia.com/genre/acid-house.md): 8 tracks. Also known as acid, acieed, 303 music, second summer of love. One discontinued Roland bass synthesiser, misused. Chicago producers found that twisting a TB-303's filter mid-pattern produced a squelch nothing else made, and Britain built two summers of illegal parties on the sound.
- [Afrobeat](https://waxonia.com/genre/afrobeat.md): 8 tracks. Also known as afro-beat, africa 70, highlife funk. Highlife and Yoruba percussion welded to James Brown's rhythm section in Lagos from 1969, stretched to twenty minutes and pointed at the government. Not to be confused with the later, unrelated pop genre spelled afrobeats.
- [Amapiano](https://waxonia.com/genre/amapiano.md): 7 tracks. Also known as piano, yanos, log drum. Gauteng's deep-house descendant, built on jazzy piano chords, shuffling percussion and a bending synthetic bass note called the log drum. Slow, spacious, endlessly extendable, and by the twenties the most exported South African music ever made.

Eno named it in 1978, but the tradition runs from Satie's furniture music to modern drone, and it is the only genre defined by how you are allowed to listen.

Istanbul at the end of the sixties, where a generation set Anatolian folk melodies and aşık poetry against fuzz guitar and Hammond organ — microtonal saz lines arranged for a rock band, and often pointed squarely at the state.
- [Baile Funk](https://waxonia.com/genre/baile-funk.md): 7 tracks. Also known as funk carioca, funk brasileiro, proibidão, montagem. Rio's favela dance parties from the late eighties, built on two Miami bass breaks looped almost without variation, with shouted Portuguese over the top and a police relationship that has never been anything but hostile.

Not a sound so much as a permission: Alfredo Fiorito's sets at Amnesia in Ibiza put Italo, indie, dub, soft rock and African records in one night, and the British DJs who visited in 1987 took the idea home and started acid house with it.

A bass line with numbers under it, a soloist above, and the invention of the idea that a piece should be driven by harmony moving somewhere. Also the invention of opera, the concerto and the fugue, which is a fair century and a half of work.
- [Bleep Techno](https://waxonia.com/genre/bleep-techno.md): 6 tracks. Also known as bleep, bleep and bass, yorkshire bleep, warp. Sheffield and Leeds, 1989: Detroit's sequenced tones stripped to a few sine bleeps and dropped over sub-bass borrowed from Jamaican sound systems. The first British techno that sounded like nowhere in America.
- [Bluegrass](https://waxonia.com/genre/bluegrass.md): 8 tracks. Also known as bill monroe, high lonesome, newgrass, old-time. A named invention rather than a folk drift: the line-up Bill Monroe assembled in 1945 — mandolin, banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass, no drums — playing string-band music at bebop tempo with a solo order borrowed from jazz.
- [Blues](https://waxonia.com/genre/blues.md): 10 tracks. Also known as delta blues, chicago blues, country blues, electric blues. Twelve bars, three chords and a form flexible enough to carry a century. First recorded in 1920, moved north to Chicago and plugged in after the war, and the ancestor of very nearly every American music on this map.

Samba reduced almost to nothing in the beach apartments of Rio at the end of the fifties: a whispered vocal, a guitar playing a rhythm that implies the percussion rather than stating it, and jazz harmony underneath.
- [Breakbeat Hardcore](https://waxonia.com/genre/breakbeat-hardcore.md): 9 tracks. Also known as hardcore, rave, ardkore, oldskool. Britain's rave music between acid house and jungle: sampled funk breaks sped to breaking point, piano riffs, cartoon samples and a sub-bass borrowed from Kingston. Two frantic years that produced two whole genres.

A mid-nineties British argument that guitar pop should sound English again — Kinks chords, local vocabulary and a self-conscious rejection of American grunge — conducted largely in the London press and briefly in the singles chart.

Phnom Penh in the years before 1975, where Khmer vocal ornament met surf guitar, garage organ and Latin rhythms heard on American Forces radio. Almost every musician on this list was murdered by the Khmer Rouge.

The living dance and song repertoire of Ireland and Scotland — reels, jigs, airs and unaccompanied sean-nós — carried by ear for centuries and still played in pubs by people who never wrote any of it down.

Where house music was invented: drum machines, disco records cut up on cheap gear, and a gospel sense of release, made on Chicago's South Side after disco was declared dead everywhere else.
- [City Pop](https://waxonia.com/genre/city-pop.md): 8 tracks. Also known as シティ・ポップ, japanese city pop, light mellow. Tokyo in its bubble years: session-perfect studio pop made for people with a new car and a coastal road, borrowing American funk, soft rock and disco and polishing them past anything the originals attempted.

Vienna, roughly 1750 to 1820: the continuo dropped, the orchestra standardised, and music organised around a form built on two contrasting keys arguing and resolving. Balance treated as the highest value, and then Beethoven.

Cuban son records reached Kinshasa on 78s in the 1930s and came back transformed: Lingala lyrics, interlocking electric guitars, and the sebene — the long instrumental release the whole song exists to reach.

The commercial music of the white rural South, from the 1927 Bristol sessions onward: Scots-Irish ballad structure, blues phrasing and a lyric convention that prizes the plain statement over the clever one.

Colombia's Caribbean coast: Indigenous gaita flutes over African drums, later scored for big band and exported down the whole continent until Peru, Mexico and Argentina each had a cumbia of their own.
- [Daggering](https://waxonia.com/genre/daggering.md): 9 tracks. Also known as daggerin, dagga. A dance that took over a stretch of dancehall and then got that stretch banned. From 2006 the riddims ran fast and skeletal, the lyric described the dance instead of boasting around it, and in February 2009 Jamaica's Broadcasting Commission outlawed the whole subject on air.
- [Dancehall](https://waxonia.com/genre/dancehall.md): 9 tracks. Also known as ragga, raggamuffin, bashment, riddim. Reggae with the band replaced by a riddim and the singer replaced by a deejay. From 1979 the rhythm track became a shared public asset that dozens of records were built on, which is a distribution model as much as a sound.

The original techno: machine funk made in Detroit from the mid-eighties on, where Kraftwerk's precision met Motown's sense of melody and a post-industrial city imagined its own future in drum machines.
- [Disco](https://waxonia.com/genre/disco.md): 10 tracks. Also known as four on the floor, philly soul, garage disco. Funk rebuilt for a room where the record never stops. A four-on-the-floor kick, strings, and an extended arrangement designed for a DJ rather than for radio — the first popular music written for the mix.
- [Dream Pop](https://waxonia.com/genre/dream-pop.md): 8 tracks. Also known as dreampop, ethereal wave, 4ad sound. Post-punk's guitar textures turned towards beauty rather than tension, with the voice mixed as another instrument and the reverb doing the emotional work. The step between Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine.
- [Drum and Bass](https://waxonia.com/genre/drum-and-bass.md): 15 tracks. Also known as dnb, d&b, drum & bass, drum n bass, jungle. Breakbeat-driven dance music built on chopped Amen breaks at 160-180 BPM over sub-bass, born from UK hardcore and jungle in the early nineties and still the most rhythmically inventive music the country has produced.
- [Dub](https://waxonia.com/genre/dub.md): 8 tracks. Also known as dub reggae, jamaican dub, version. Jamaican engineers in the early seventies discover that the mixing desk is an instrument. Vocals drop out, the drum and bass are pushed to the front, and reverb becomes the room the record is played in.
- [Dub Techno](https://waxonia.com/genre/dub-techno.md): 8 tracks. Also known as basic channel sound, berlin dub, chain reaction. Detroit techno played through a Kingston mixing desk in a Berlin basement. From 1993 a handful of producers reduced the music to a chord stab, a delay and an enormous amount of tape hiss, and found that almost nothing was enough.
- [Dubstep](https://waxonia.com/genre/dubstep.md): 9 tracks. Also known as dubstep music, bass music, croydon sound. UK garage stripped of its vocals, its swing and its optimism, rebuilt around a half-time beat and a sub-bass you feel before you hear. Made in South London from around 2002 for rooms with the right sound system.
- [Electro](https://waxonia.com/genre/electro.md): 9 tracks. Also known as electro-funk, electro funk, breakdance music, 808 music. Funk played by a Roland TR-808 instead of a band, invented in New York in 1982 when Kraftwerk records reached Bronx block parties. Robotic, hard-panned and built for cardboard on pavement.
- [Ethio-Jazz](https://waxonia.com/genre/ethio-jazz.md): 7 tracks. Also known as ethiopian jazz, ethiopiques, swinging addis. Mulatu Astatke's invention: Ethiopian pentatonic modes and Amharic song set against soul-jazz arrangements, made in Addis Ababa in the years before the 1974 revolution closed the clubs and the studios.
- [Fado](https://waxonia.com/genre/fado.md): 7 tracks. Also known as fado de lisboa, fado de coimbra, saudade. Portuguese urban song, born in the taverns and back streets of Lisbon, built on a voice, a Spanish guitar and the pear-shaped Portuguese guitarra. Its subject is saudade — longing for something that may never have existed.
- [Flamenco](https://waxonia.com/genre/flamenco.md): 7 tracks. Also known as cante jondo, andalusian, cante flamenco. Andalusian song, guitar and dance built by Roma and rural poor communities in the nineteenth century, organised into palos — forms with their own metre and mood, from the near-unaccompanied grief of siguiriyas to the party of bulerías.
- [French House](https://waxonia.com/genre/french-house.md): 9 tracks. Also known as french touch, filter house, nu-disco, la french touch. Paris in the late nineties, looping four bars of a forgotten disco record and sweeping a filter across it until the loop becomes a song. Compressed, warm and unapologetically nostalgic — house music made by people who loved the samples more than the scene.
- [Funk](https://waxonia.com/genre/funk.md): 10 tracks. Also known as funk music, the one, p-funk. The rhythmic reorganisation of American popular music around the first beat of the bar. From 1967 onward, melody and harmony give way to interlocking parts, and the groove itself becomes the subject of the song.
- [G-Funk](https://waxonia.com/genre/g-funk.md): 8 tracks. Also known as gangsta funk, west coast hip-hop, death row sound. Los Angeles hip-hop rebuilt around slow tempos, a whining Moog lead and Parliament basslines played live rather than sampled. From 1992 it was the commercial centre of rap and the most sonically relaxed music ever made about violence.
- [Gnawa](https://waxonia.com/genre/gnawa.md): 5 tracks. Also known as gnaoua, guinbri music, lila. Moroccan trance music carried north by enslaved West Africans and played through the night at healing ceremonies: a three-string bass lute, iron castanets, and one pattern held until something gives.
- [Golden Age Hip-Hop](https://waxonia.com/genre/golden-age-hip-hop.md): 12 tracks. Also known as golden age, boom bap, 90s hip hop, east coast hip hop. The stretch from roughly 1986 to 1996 when sampling law was loose, technique advanced every month, and hip-hop produced more permanently important records than any comparable decade in popular music.

Blues technique applied to sacred words, codified in Chicago churches from the early thirties. The training ground for almost every great American voice of the next fifty years, and the source of the vocabulary soul secularised.

Durban's answer to kwaito: a broken, off-grid drum pattern with no four-to-the-floor kick at all, built on cracked software and traded by WhatsApp. Raw, minor-key and physically overwhelming on a big system.

London MC music built on cheap software at 140 BPM, born on pirate radio in the east of the city around 2002. Square-wave basslines, no swing, and a vocal delivery that treats the beat as something to fight.
- [Grunge](https://waxonia.com/genre/grunge.md): 8 tracks. Also known as seattle sound, sub pop, the seattle scene. Seattle from 1988: hardcore's volume and independence welded to Black Sabbath riffs and pop melodies, on a local label with a deliberate house aesthetic, three years before the whole thing was sold to the world as a youth movement.

American punk taken to its logical end from 1980: faster, shorter, shouted, and run entirely on self-released records, borrowed halls and a touring network the bands built themselves because nobody else would have them.

West Africa's first great popular music: Akan rhythms and palm-wine guitar meeting brass-band and swing arrangements in coastal Ghana, recorded from 1928 and named for the clubs ordinary people were not admitted to.

British producers in the early nineties kept the machines and abandoned the dancefloor's obligations, treating rhythm as a place to put ideas rather than as a service to a room.

Paris around 1900, where French composers stopped treating a chord as a step towards somewhere else and started treating it as a colour worth sitting in. The most direct ancestor ambient music has.
- [Italo Disco](https://waxonia.com/genre/italo-disco.md): 8 tracks. Also known as italo, italo-disco, spaghetti dance. Disco rebuilt in Italian studios once America had declared disco dead, using cheap synthesisers instead of orchestras and English written by people who did not speak it. Melodramatic, synthetic, and enormously consequential in Chicago.

A century of American improvised music, from New Orleans marching bands to modal abstraction, compressed here into one doorway rather than a survey. Every genre on this map that values a soloist owes it something.
- [Juke and Footwork](https://waxonia.com/genre/juke-and-footwork.md): 8 tracks. Also known as footwork, juke, chicago juke, ghetto house. Chicago house accelerated past the point of comfort and handed to dancers. Ghetto house became juke became footwork: 160 BPM, chopped vocal fragments, and triplet kick patterns written to answer a dancer's feet in real time.
- [Krautrock](https://waxonia.com/genre/krautrock.md): 9 tracks. Also known as kosmische musik, kosmische, german experimental rock, motorik. West German bands from around 1970 who declined to inherit the blues. In its place: a steady unaccented pulse, tape editing treated as composition, and synthesisers used for texture rather than for showmanship.

House music slowed to a walking pace in Johannesburg townships in the first years after apartheid, with the vocal shifted from singing to a half-spoken chant in tsotsitaal. The sound of a generation that had just been given a country.

From 1988 Manchester bands stopped separating the band from the DJ, and British indie spent five years trying to be a dance record.

Western Mexico's string band tradition, from the Jalisco countryside to the plazas of Mexico City, formalised in the twentieth century around violins, trumpets, vihuela and the great bellied guitarrón.

Memphis in the early nineties, on cassettes sold hand to hand: murky four-track tapes, horror-film samples, triplet hi-hats and a chanted hook — the blueprint for trap, made a decade before anyone in Atlanta used the word.

Liverpool, 1962: dockside kids who had heard American records first because the ships brought them, playing rhythm and blues faster and tighter than the originals, in a city with three hundred working beat groups.

Miami in the mid-eighties, where electro was rebuilt around one thing: the 808 kick, tuned low and long enough to move air in a car boot. Fast, filthy, and engineered for a sound system rather than a radio.

American composers from the mid-sixties who replaced development with repetition and let a simple process run until it produced something nobody wrote. Western art music after tonality stopped being compulsory. Atonality, serial method, noise admitted as material, and eventually silence — a century of composers deciding which inherited rule to stop obeying next.

Paris, 1948: a radio engineer decides that a recording of a train is material for a composition. The moment recorded sound stops documenting music and starts being it, which is the premise every sampler on this map depends on.

Live bands playing deliberately behind the beat, seventies chord voicings, and an insistence on album-length statements at the height of the singles era.
- [Northern Soul](https://waxonia.com/genre/northern-soul.md): 7 tracks. Also known as wigan casino, rare soul, the twisted wheel. Not a style anyone recorded — a style of listening. Northern English all-nighters from 1970 built a canon out of failed American soul 45s, prizing a fast four-four stomp and obscurity itself as a value.
- [Post-Punk](https://waxonia.com/genre/post-punk.md): 10 tracks. Also known as postpunk, new wave, no wave. What British and American bands did with punk's permission once its three chords ran out. Bass leads, guitars scrape rather than strum, and the rhythm section quietly imports funk, dub and German rock.

Rock reorganised around the studio and the drug, from 1966: backwards tape, modal drones, guitars through everything available, and songs allowed to run as long as they liked. Two years in which rock was stripped back to speed, volume and refusal, and the barrier to making a record collapsed. Sufi devotional singing from the shrines of Delhi and the Punjab, seven centuries old and still performed as a party of voices, harmonium and clapping hands driving a listener towards ecstasy rather than towards a chorus.

The urban song of Greece's dispossessed, made in Piraeus by refugees expelled from Asia Minor after 1922. Atlanta from 2003: 808 sub-bass tuned to a note, hi-hats rolled into triplets and thirty-second-note bursts, and a sparse, ominous synth line. Coventry, 1979: Jamaican ska played at punk speed by deliberately mixed-race bands on a label with a black-and-white chequerboard logo, at a moment when the National Front was recruiting outside British venues.

Skippy, syncopated dance music built from chopped R&B vocals and shuffled hi-hats, made in London in the late nineties. The missing link between house and everything British dance music did afterwards.

Zambia in the seventies, a few years after independence and briefly rich on copper: heavy psychedelic rock played on cheap equipment, sung in English and Bemba, with a broadcasting quota that required Zambian records on the radio.

Every one of them gets a room moving while telling it something it would rather not hear, and most of the rooms never noticed. Admits: The arrangement has to be one a room moves to, and the subject has to be something that went badly — a death, a raid, a country coming apart. A record that sounds as bleak as its subject does not qualify, and neither does a happy song with one dark line in it.
- [Miami](https://waxonia.com/theme/miami.md): 11 records, unranked, all of them also in a genre ranking. Eleven records, three of our rankings, thirty years. One drum machine tuned in a Florida car park, and what became of it in Rio and on the South Side of Chicago. Admits: Made in Miami, or built on the 808 pattern Miami tuned — and where it is the second, this site has to already publish the lineage that says so. Being upstream does not qualify: Planet Rock is the signal the city received, not a record the city made, and it is not here.
- [1994](https://waxonia.com/theme/nineteen-ninety-four.md): 12 records, unranked, all of them also in a genre ranking. Twelve records, ten of our rankings, one year. Jungle, trip-hop, Memphis, kwaito, dub techno and Britpop all arriving at once, none of them aware of the others. Admits: Released in 1994, and load-bearing: a scene has to date itself from this record. A great record that happened to come out that year and changed nothing after it does not qualify, however much we like it.
- [1976](https://waxonia.com/theme/nineteen-seventy-six.md): 11 records, unranked, all of them also in a genre ranking. Eleven records, six countries, one year. Lagos, Kingston, Casablanca, Lusaka, Istanbul and Accra all having a better 1976 than anywhere with a music press. Admits: Released in 1976, and it has to be the best evidence that its own scene was somewhere other than London or New York that year. A great 1976 record from a place already at the centre of things does not qualify.
- [Sung to Someone](https://waxonia.com/theme/sung-to-someone.md): 12 records, unranked, all of them also in a genre ranking. Twelve records, eleven of our rankings and thirty-eight years apart, all doing one thing: turning to a single person and saying it out loud. Admits: Every record here is one person addressing another, and is that address the whole way through. A song about love in general does not qualify, however great; nor does an instrumental; nor a record whose "you" turns out to be a city, a scene or a crowd.

One line, five records, forty years: Kingston to Croydon by way of every British rave that treated the sub-bass as the point rather than the foundation. Admits: The sub-bass has to be the subject of the record, not its foundation. A track with an enormous low end that would survive being played on a small speaker does not belong here.

Everything else we publish is downstream of one of these, and most of it is downstream of several. Admits: A record only qualifies if something we publish is demonstrably downstream of it — a lineage arrow, a borrowed rhythm, a sampled bar. Being early is not enough, and neither is being great.
- [The Eighties](https://waxonia.com/theme/the-eighties.md): 13 records, unranked, all of them also in a genre ranking. Thirteen records, ten of our rankings, ten years. The decade cheap machines and cheap pressings reached people with no access to a record industry, told through the labels they had to start instead. Admits: Released between 1980 and 1989, and made outside the industry that was selling the decade — the label has to be the makers' own or their scene's. A great eighties record made on a major's budget does not qualify, however much the decade is remembered for it.
- [Twice Over](https://waxonia.com/theme/twice-over.md): 9 records, unranked, all of them also in a genre ranking. Three artists, nine of our rankings. Everyone the corpus ranks in three different genres, and the records that got them in. Admits: The artist has to be ranked by us in at least three separate genres, and each record here has to be one of those rankings. An artist who merely dabbled elsewhere does not qualify — the other scene had to keep the record.

A shop in Sheffield that kept signing the thing that came next, and kept being right about it. Admits: The record has to be one our rankings already hold, and it has to have moved the label somewhere it had not been. A good Warp record that sounds like the last Warp record is exactly what this list is not for.
